Our fourth concert includes twentieth-century works; three that feature quintessentially American rhythms and one to welcome spring.  "Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo," by Aaron Copeland, is drawn from his score for Agnes de Mille's ballet of the same name.  The music incorporates several well-known American folk songs, and this symphonic version of the ballet score has become very popular with orchestras and audiences.  Frederick Delius' short tone-poem for small orchestra, "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring" follows, appropriately for this season.  It was composed in 1912 and may be the best-known of his works.  You will hear the cuckoo's call in the instruments of the orchestra!

Leonard Bernstein used jazz elements in much of his music, especially in his film and theater scores. "West Side Story" includes jazzy songs and dances, salsa music, romantic ballads, and witty Broadway songs. The original Broadway production premiered in 1957.

The popular and delightfully jazzy "Pavane," from Morton Gould's Symphonette No. 2, published in 1938, rounds out the orchestral program.

WSO principal bassist Lou Pappas and friends will also give our audience a taste of jazz improvisation at this concert.
