The pieces in this concert link music with dance, theater, and visual art.

"Masques et Bergamasques" is a suite Fauré assembled from his own incidental music for a comedia dell'arte performance at the Monaco theater.

A pavane is a stately Spanish court dance. Fauré originally composed the piece for piano and orchestrated it later. It became very popular and inspired Debussy and Ravel to write similar pieces.

Joey DeSanctis is a pianist, guitarist, and composer currently studying at SUNY Purchase. Excitingly, the WSO performance of Sinfonietta will be its world premier with a professional orchestra!

The grand opening theme and lively movements of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" are well-known to most lovers of classical music. The titular exhibition was held at the Imperial Academy of the Arts in St. Petersburg and featured works by artist Victor Hartmann. Mussorgsky composed the work for piano in 1874 and Maurice Ravel orchestrated it in 1922.

Fauré taught Ravel at the Paris Conservatoire and was admired by both Tchaikovsky, featured in our first concert of romantics, and Copeland, featured in our final, jazz-influenced concert this season.
