Join us for outstanding performances during this 2025 Woodstock Playhouse Theatre Festival Season as we celebrate the 87th season of the Woodstock Playhouse; originally established in 1938 by Robert Elwyn, a Woodstock Resident, Broadway/Film professional director/actor and member of one of Woodstock's oldest families...and the 15th anniversary season of the current Woodstock Playhouse theatrical family.
In 1893 Paris, La Môme Pistache, the proud owner of a Montmartre dance hall, battles with Aristide Forestiere, a self-righteous judge determined to close all establishments featuring the scandalous can-can. Eventually, the two fall in love, and the judge concedes that “obscenity is in the eye of the beholder.”
Cole Porter’s celebrated score features the famous “Garden of Eden Ballet,” along with several entrancing Porter standards, including “C’est Magnifique,” “I Love Paris,” "Allez-vous-en", “It’s All Right with Me” and the show-stopping title number, "Can-Can".
Can-Can premiered on Broadway on May 7, 1953 at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 892 performances. Directed by Abe Burrows, the production featured Lilo, Hans Conried, Peter Cookson, Erik Rhodes and Gwen Verdon.
Can-Can was the Winner of Two 1954 Tony Awards, for Best Featured Actress and Choreography, the Winner of the 1954 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Stage Performance by Gwen Verdon, and a Nominee for Three 1981 Tony Awards, including Best Choreography.
This performance is brought to the stage of the iconic Woodstock Playhouse featuring the Woodstock Playhouse Summer Theatre Cast 2025, a regional company of rising-pre-Broadway-professional performers widely acclaimed for some of the finest performances in our NY & Tri-State region.
